Nigeria–United States Parliamentary Friendship Group

The Nigeria–United States Parliamentary Friendship Group is a bipartisan parliamentary caucus within the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria established to strengthen and deepen the strategic relationship between Nigeria and the United States through legislative diplomacy. The Group serves as a vital platform for fostering cooperation between the Nigerian National Assembly and the United States Congress while promoting mutual understanding, shared democratic values, and sustainable partnerships that benefit both nations.

Recognizing the importance of parliamentary engagement in international relations, the Friendship Group facilitates dialogue between lawmakers, government institutions, diplomatic missions, private sector stakeholders, civil society organizations, academia, and development partners. Through these engagements, the Group contributes to building stronger institutional relationships and advancing policies that support peace, prosperity, innovation, and inclusive development.

The Group is committed to promoting collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including democratic governance, constitutional development, security and counterterrorism, economic growth, trade and investment, education, healthcare, agriculture, technology, climate resilience, youth empowerment, women’s leadership, and cultural exchange. By encouraging legislative cooperation and knowledge sharing, the Group seeks to strengthen institutions and support the formulation of policies that positively impact citizens in both countries.

As a bridge between the legislative bodies of Nigeria and the United States, the Friendship Group actively encourages parliamentary exchanges, policy dialogues, bilateral meetings, study visits, conferences, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives. These activities enable legislators to exchange experiences, learn from best practices, and develop innovative approaches to addressing common challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Group also works to support stronger economic relations by promoting an enabling environment for trade, investment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and business partnerships. Through engagement with the public and private sectors, it seeks to encourage opportunities that stimulate economic growth, create employment, and improve the quality of life for citizens.

Beyond legislative collaboration, the Nigeria–United States Parliamentary Friendship Group values the role of people-to-people diplomacy. It promotes educational partnerships, cultural understanding, professional exchanges, and youth engagement as essential pillars for building lasting friendships and strengthening bilateral ties between both nations.

Guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, respect for democratic institutions, and mutual cooperation, the Group remains committed to advancing parliamentary diplomacy as a powerful instrument for international collaboration. Through sustained engagement and strategic partnerships, the Nigeria–United States Parliamentary Friendship Group continues to contribute to a stronger, more productive, and mutually beneficial relationship between Nigeria and the United States, supporting shared aspirations for peace, democratic governance, economic prosperity, and sustainable development.
